Thomson Reuters Research puts Prime Healthcare Services among Top 10 U.S. health systems

August 10, 2009, Victorville, CA - Prime Healthcare Services (PHS), which owns and operates 13 acute care hospitals in California, has been ranked by Thomson Reuters as one of the top 10 US health systems and is the only for-profit health system to receive this coveted recognition from the west coast. Thomson Reuters made the announcement of the country’s Top 10 Health Systems today as part of its unprecedented first-time survey of health systems based on hospitals’ clinical performance of quality and efficiency. PHS ranked higher than 242 of its esteemed competitors in nearly every category, most notably surpassing such acclaimed institutions like the Mayo Foundation and the Cleveland Clinic.

“This prestigious recognition speaks volumes of Prime’s commitment to its core values of quality and efficiency of health care delivery, especially in these times of rapidly evolving healthcare reform across the nation.” said Prem Reddy, MD, FACC, FCCP, PHS’ Chairman of the Board, who was recognized by Modern Healthcare as one of the 50 Most Powerful Physician Executives in Healthcare in 2008 and 2009.

Researchers from the Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals® program analyzed the quality and efficiency of 252 health systems which involved a rigorous evaluation of health care systems nationwide comprised of 1,720 hospital members and a total of 9,809,400 patient discharges in 2007. Researchers looked at five metrics that gauge clinical quality and efficiency: mortality, medical complications, patient safety, average length of stay, and adherence to clinical standards of care. “This provides the basis for a serious discussion about the role and responsibility of the health system in assuring quality and efficiency to each community in which a hospital carries the health system brand,” stated Jean Chenoweth of Thompson Reuters.

PHS’ hospitals were recognized several times in the past by various renowned national benchmarking organizations for their quality and efficiency in patient care, including the Top 100 Hospitals® award for two of its hospitals, Desert Valley Hospital in Victorville, CA (2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008) and West Anaheim Medical Center in Anaheim, CA (2008) by Solucient/ Thompson Reuters. In addition, Desert Valley Hospital was honored as a Top 1% hospital with the 2007 Premier/CareScience Select Practice National Quality Award for superior patient outcomes. PHS’ hospitals received highest scores from the Joint Commission, Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program, and Healthgrades in various aspects of quality patient care.

“All our processes were meticulously analyzed and implemented with the ‘patient as the focus’ that results in superior clinical outcomes and cost-effective protocols,” explained Suzanne Richards, RN, MBA, MPH, PHS’ Vice President of Nursing & Clinical Operations. “We have placed an incredible amount of effort in raising the bar for what qualifies as the ‘standard of care.’ Our physicians and staff do a fantastic job in meeting these expectations on a daily basis,” said Lex Reddy, MBA, MHA, PHS’ President and Chief Executive Officer.
